Capture 1,000 came after AMW received a tip that Dwight Smith, an accused killer from New York, was hiding out in Richmond, VA. The U.S. Marshals Service and the NYPD jumped on the tip, and Smith was arrested without incident just hours after AMW broadcast his profile on April 19. When AMERICA'S MOST WANTED premiered in February 1988 on FOX, no one knew if asking television viewers for tips to help law enforcement catch fugitives would work - but it didn't take long to find out. The first fugitive profiled had been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list for nearly a year, and thanks to AMW viewers, he was arrested just four days after the broadcast.
