The American Society of Civil Engineers has given our nation's infrastructure a near failing grade of "D" overall. According to the Urban Land Institute, the United States needs to spend $2 trillion dollars to rebuild roads, bridges and other critical pieces of public infrastructure that are reaching the end of their life spans; money that many believe just does not exist, sending the country barreling toward crisis.
The fear: that more catastrophic infrastructure failures similar to those in the past such as the I35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2007 and the gas transmission line explosion in San Bruno, California in September of 2010 could occur.
In the CNBC Original Production "Race to Rebuild: America's Infrastructure" CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera explores what it will take to put the nation back on track. Caruso-Cabrera takes viewers inside the infrastructure problems at hand and asks experts and policy makers "How did we get here?" and "What is being done to solve the problem?"
