Fifth Contender Eliminated On Oxygen's "THE GLEE PROJECT" Matheus Fernandes Of Atlanta Does Not Make "CALL BACK" LIST

Jul 19, 2011 - 1:54:07 PM

Only Seven Contenders Remain All Vying For A Seven Episode

Guest Starring Role On 'GLEE'

Max Adler ("Glee's" Dave Karofsky) to Guest Mentor in Sixth Episode of

"The Glee Project" on Sunday, July 24th at 9:00PM ET/PT

In a unique format twist during last night's episode of Oxygen's "The Glee Project," the remaining eight contenders paired up for four separate performances to learn the art of the duet. Hannah and Alex were assigned the glitzy song "Nowadays" from the musical 'Chicago' while Damian and Matheus were assigned another show tune, "The Lady Is a Tramp." Cameron and Lindsay were given the romantic "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and Marissa and Samuel sang a retro version of the Brit-pop group Human League's "Don't You Want Me."

Guest mentor Darren Criss ("Glee's" Blaine) made his second appearance in the season during "Pairability" week to coach the group on learning how to work together, which caused some of the contenders to evaluate their personal boundaries. In the end, Matheus Fernandes (20) of Atlanta was eliminated. For his last chance performance, Matheus, with an assist from Damian, was assigned to sing Nancy Sinatra's hit song "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" for executive producer Ryan Murphy. Matheus gave it his all, but unfortunately, it was not enough to keep him in the competition.

Matheus, originally from Brazil, moved to the United States eight years ago to consult American doctors about his 4'9" height. Their conclusion: he is "just short." Despite not knowing how to speak English, he enrolled in school three days after moving to US and through the help of his trusty dictionary, mastered the language within months. Music has always been his best companion - helping him get through life's difficult challenges. Finally overcoming his insecurities, Matheus decided to audition for "The Glee Project" at the Dallas/Fort Worth open casting call. He proudly proves that being different is never a bad thing.

The remaining seven contenders will face their next "Glee"-inspired challenge on Sunday, July 24th at 9pm ET/PT. Guest mentor Max Adler ("Glee's" Dave Karofsky, "the bully") teaches the contenders how to 'grin and bear it' during "Tenacity" week. The contenders are pushed to their physical limits performing their first mash-up song.

From Ryan Murphy, the creator and Emmy award-winning executive producer of "Glee," and executive producer of "Glee" Dante Di Loreto, "The Glee Project" is a 10-episode competition series seeking to find the next star of "Glee" and will award one winner with the ultimate prize of a seven-episode role in season three of the hit FOX show. The series began with 12 extraordinarily talented individuals that were picked from thousands of entries, and an exhaustive nationwide and online talent search. The series uncovers a unique group of artists from both professional and amateur backgrounds, proving every underdog has a fighting chance at stardom. Each week one contender is sent home through intensive rounds of singing, dancing and acting based on assignments. During the final 'Last Chance Round,' the bottom three must perform for Ryan Murphy, casting director Robert Ulrich, and choreographer Zach Woodlee as they carefully assess which of them has what it takes to be one of the next new faces of the award-winning show. In the case of this episode, the bottom three duos had to do performances.

For fans who want more of the "The Glee Project," Microsoft's search engine Bing is partnering with Oxygen to host the Bing Fan Favorite Contest, allowing fans to vote for their own favorite contenders. Shazam is also partnering with Oxygen to allow viewers to use the Shazam app to unlock exclusive content from each episode of the show. This week, Shazam users will be treated to extended footage from Max Adler's one-on-one session with the homework assignment winner.

"The Glee Project" is produced by Ryan Murphy Television and Embassy Row with Ryan Murphy, Dante Di Loreto, Michael Davies and Shauna Minoprio serving as executive producers.
