MSNBC's "LOCKUP" Premieres With 12 Brand New Episodes - Starting May 25

May 20, 2009 - 8:32:00 AM

MSNBC Takes A 360 Degree Look At The State Of Incarceration In America Through Exclusive Extended Stay Series In Indiana's Adult And Juvenile Systems

MSNBC is kicking off summer with a new season of "Lockup" starting on Monday, May 25th at 10 pm ET. After its Memorial Day premiere, the series will continue to air on Saturdays at 10 pm ET. In the first six episodes, MSNBC cameras go inside Indiana State Penitentiary, a maximum-security adult prison, where inmates were given cameras to document their experiences for the first time ever. In the following six episodes, MSNBC spent more than a year investigating the system of juvenile detention and incarceration in Indiana's Lake County, where the state mandate of rehabilitation aims to keep kids from ending up in a place like Indiana State.

The first part of the series, "Lockup: Extended Stay - Indiana State Justice," is produced by MSNBC and 44 Blue. "Lockup" crews spent four months embedded inside Indiana State Prison, a facility that predates the Civil War. Located across Lake Michigan from Chicago, it is home to the state's most dangerous inmates, its primary mental health cellblock and Death Row. The inmates themselves, who were allowed to borrow the producers' video cameras, captured some of the most revealing scenes. "Inmate cams" were supplied to more than one dozen inmates, including Death Row inmate Eric Wrinkles, the next man expected to be executed in Indiana.

In the second part of the series, MSNBC and Calamari Productions take viewers into a world legally closed to the public and the media, in the gripping new Special Investigative series "Lockup: Lake County Juvenile Detention." The first of six episodes premieres on Saturday, July 4th at 10 pm ET. From inside the confines of America's dete
ntion facilities to the high stakes courtroom hearings each episode explores where juvenile crime begins, how it evolves over time and what life is like for the kids, families and professionals in the system.

Each episode of "Lockup: Lake County Juvenile Justice" follows individual teens through a complicated web of incarceration, placement, education and rehab. For some, this means months in detention and multiple court hearings; for others, detention is no longer an option - juvenile prison is the final destination, and we're there to document every experience along the way. The unprecedented access to film this groundbreaking series has been grated by the Indiana Supreme Court and Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard.

Michael Rubin is vice president, long form programming for MSNBC. Scott Hooker is senior executive producer, documentary production and development, MSNBC. Elise Warner is executive producer, MSNBC's "Lockup" series. Rasha Drachkovitch is executive producer, 44 Blue Productions. Karen Grau is director, writer and executive producer, Calamari Productions.
