Planet Green Asks America: Can You Take THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE?

Sep 24, 2009 - 11:28:33 AM

Planet Green Acquires Six-Part Series and Presents Exclusive, U.S. Premiere on Monday, October 12 at 9PM ET

Based on the 2006 bestselling book, The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating by authors James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith, Planet Green presents the U.S. Premiere of THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE, the first television series to explore the highly-acclaimed local food movement in a provocative, entertaining way. Part reality series, part docu-soap, part social experiment, THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE follows the people of Mission, British Columbia, as they take on the challenge to eat food grown and produced within a 100 mile radius for 100 days. The six-part series, produced by Paperny Films in Vancouver, B.C., makes its U.S. debut on Monday, October 12 from 9 - 10PM ET, with new one-hour episodes airing every Monday starting at 9PM ET.

In the series, authors MacKinnon and Smith are our guides in the experiment, providing behind-the-scenes access to the experiences of six families local to Mission. As the kitchen cupboards are stripped bare, viewers ask, "How hard can it be?" The families begin to panic as they soon discover it is not going to be as easy as it first appeared. Viewers can relate to the depth, heart, and humor of the Mission families -- modern, everyday families -- as they take control of what they eat and reconnect with food, family, community, and the land. But the question remains -- can these families really change their relationship with food? Will they stick to the diet for 100 days?

THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE is a food revolution that documents the 100-Milers' progress, revealing the ups and downs, and downright creativity of ordinary citizens as they try to cook three full meals day after day from locally available ingredients. Items on the "banned in Mission" list include coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar, beer, pop, rice, pepper, most spices, tropical fruits, peanut butter, and commercial bread and pasta. So, what does that leave?

Along with considerable health and environmental benefits, THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE is an examination of people's relationship with food, chronicling a journey through the process of growing, sourcing, preparing and sharing food as the families attempt to adhere to a new diet and lifestyle. Throughout the challenge, PlanetGreen.com will offer viewers valuable, practical tips and resources that people all over America can use to adopt their own "100 Mile Challenge".

THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE is a six-part series with new one-hour premiere episodes airing every Monday night at 9PM ET starting on Monday, October 12. THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE is produced by Paperny Films. David Paperny and Cal Shumiatcher are executive producers. For Planet Green, Laura Michalchyshyn is executive in charge of production.
