Suchin Pak And Sway Calloway Host "MTVU'S AGAINST OUR WILL CAMPAIGN: FIGHTING MODERN-DAY SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES" On December 15 At 12 P.M. ET/PT
"mtvU's Against Our Will: Fighting Modern-Day Slavery in the United States," a half-hour, commercial-free special co-hosted by MTV's SuChin Pak and Sway Calloway, will premiere on mtvU to more than 750 college campuses and on-demand at mtvU.againstourwill.org beginning at 12 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday, December 15. The programming block will feature poignant interviews with human trafficking survivors and students talking about what they can do to take action to end modern-day slavery, along with excerpts from roundtable conversations with college students candidly discussing the issue.
Additionally, the special will include music videos from Lil Wayne ("How to Love") and Rise Against ("Prayer of the Refugee"), related to issues discussed in the half-hour.
Throughout the half-hour, SuChin and Sway will examine a number of issues tied to human trafficking, from how victims are coerced and manipulated, to how they are treated like property. "mtvU's Against Our Will: Fighting Modern-Day Slavery in the United States" will also tell stories of human trafficking survivors who were able to speak up and get help. One interview spotlights Given Kachepa, who was trafficked into the U.S. from Zambia as a young teen.
Given discusses how he was forced to sing up to seven concerts a day in a traveling boys' choir without pay, often denied rest and threatened with deportation, in addition to being barred from contacting his family back home. He finally escaped and started a new life with the help of a family in the U.S. Another segment focuses on Katrina Owens, who was coerced into the commercial sex trade by her former boyfriend, but began a new life as an activist after successfully fleeing from him. A student activist will also be highlighted in the half-hour, along with interstitials of students from around the country discussing how the issue relates to them and what can be done to combat it.
The special is part of the "mtvU Against Our Will Campaign," which taps into the growing student movement to end modern-day slavery and makes it easy for young people to take action to help stop one of the greatest human rights atrocities of our time. The campaign was launched at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in September 2011, in partnership with Free the Slaves, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) and Polaris Project.
"mtvU's Against Our Will: Fighting Modern-Day Slavery in the United States" was written by Erhan Erdem and directed by Sophia Cranshaw, who also serves as executive producer.
