"THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART" Presents "WORLD CUP 2010: INTO AFRICA" Ongoing Reports Filed From The United States And South Africa By Correspondent John Oliver Beginning Thursday, June 10 At 11:00 P.M. ET/PT

Jun 9, 2010 - 9:56:11 AM

World Cup fever is spreading around the globe and with the start of the quadrennial competition just two days away, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart's" senior foreign sports correspondent, John Oliver, embarks on "World Cup 2010: Into Africa." This special, multi-part presentation from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" begins with its first installment airing on Thursday, June 10 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

"Daily Show" correspondent John Oliver and producer Tim Greenberg travel to Johannesburg, South Africa for a multi-part series entitled "World Cup 2010: Into Africa." In the first piece, which airs tomorrow, Oliver embeds with the U.S. Soccer team as they train for their highly-anticipated game against England. Future segments will see Oliver sitting down with the acting South African ambassador, taking a look at the first "African" World Cup, examining the current state of race relations and, finally, celebrating the true spirit of the game.

"As a little boy, my only dream was to one day play for England in the World Cup. It seems that the closest I will ever get to that dream is to go to the World Cup and make fun of it," said Oliver. "If these pieces result in anything less than soccer becoming the number one sport in America, I will deem them a total failure."

"World Cup 2010: Into Africa" is the latest of "The Daily Show's" international special reports. The Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning series previously travelled to Iran in 2009 ("Jason Jones in Iran: Behind the Veil"), China in 2008 ("Rob Riggle: Chasing the Dragon") and Iraq in 2007 ("Operation Silent Thunder: 'The Daily Show' in Iraq"), among numerous other overseas destinations.

"The Daily Show" airs Monday-Thursday at 11:00 p.m. and repeats at 1:30 a.m. the same night and at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. the following day (all times ET/PT). Full episodes, as well as clips, are posted for viewing the following day at www.thedailyshow.com with URL and embed links.

Jon Stewart, Rory Albanese and Josh Lieb are the executive producers of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" with Kahane Cooperman serving as co-executive producer. Supervising producers are Steve Bodow, Jennifer Flanz, Hillary Kun, Adam Lowitt and Jim Margolis. The series' head writer is Steve Bodow and it is directed by Chuck O'Neil.
